Khaled Abunijaila, a registered refugee from Gaza City, attended the private Rosary Sisters school through high school, where he maintained an outstanding academic record and continuously ranked at the top of his class.
Students completed their undergraduate degrees this year and last year (when no graduation ceremony was held due to Covid-19), in the special programs at five universities: Ain Shams, Alexandria, Assiut, Cairo, and Mansoura Universities. The scholarship promotes the full inclusion of people with disabilities, and 5% of graduating students have a disability.
The new Sawiris Distinction Scholarship will fund undergraduate studies for 40 outstanding Egyptian public school graduates at leading Egyptian public and private universities. The fully-funded scholarship provides an outstanding academic experience for students in various important fields to support the future of the Egyptian economy, which qualifies them to obtain competitive job opportunities after graduation.

Today is World Teachers’ Day, an annual event led by UNESCO to celebrate teachers around the globe. Education is at the core of Amideast’s mission to create hope, opportunity, and understanding and it is thanks to our incredible teachers that we are able to meet this mission every day. Over the past year and a half, Covid-19 has presented our teachers with new challenges: virtual classrooms, new health and safety guidelines, and rapidly changing conditions.
Mohammed, Hope Fund Of his U.S. college experience, Palestinian Hope Fund alumnus Mohammed Abumailaq notes, “[It] showed me what an engineer is capable of doing.” A recent graduate of the University of Rochester in biomedical engineering, Mohammed had the opportunity to conduct research at his university’s medical center that will be used to help advance hearing aid technology.
Their stories—and those of all 3,200 Fulbright grantees whose programs Amideast has administered since 1970—make us especially proud to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Fulbright Program this year. The Fulbright Program is the flagship exchange program of the U.S. Department of State, and these alumni exemplify the Fulbright ideal of passionate and accomplished students, scholars, artists, teachers, and professionals of all backgrounds who, having enriched their educations and careers through their exchange experience, have also made meaningful contributions upon returning home.
