Farah Abdel-Jawad, Drexel University Farah graduated from Drexel University with a major in architectural engineering and a minor in global studies. At Drexel, she translated her passion for social issues into meaningful work as co-founder of the Middle Eastern and North African Club and Students for Justice in Palestine.
Montadhar Al-Moussawi (Iraq) is a Fulbright alum from 2019 and attended the University of Wyoming. He was awarded an ACAG to implement “Off-Grid Solar Photovoltaic System for a Countryside Primary School,” a project that will harness solar power to provide electricity to a primary school in Najaf, Iraq, taking advantage of the city’s sunny climate, long days, and clear sky.
With a third of its population of 11 million under the age of 30, youth unemployment averaging 36 percent in the past decade, and one of the world’s lowest female labor participation rates, Jordan faces considerable demographic challenges that is further complicated by the presence of nearly 4 million Syrian and Palestinian refugees and the lingering effects of the Covid pandemic on employment.
Amideast is proud to be a member of the YES Consortium, a team of five organizations that administer the YES program as Recruiting Organizations on behalf of the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA). Amideast has been a partner from the very first year of YES, recruiting nearly 4,000 students from the MENA to date.
Amideast’s Skills for Success program is designed to strengthen the employment prospects of recent graduates by improving their proficiency in workplace English and equipping them with personal and professional skills that facilitate their entry to the job market. In addition to 120 hours of English language instruction and training in computer/IT and professional skills, the program includes a transition-to-work component of supplemental English training, TOEIC test preparation, entrepreneurship awareness, or internships.
The camp was an enriching experience for the students. Through workshops and other activities, they improved their English proficiency and focused on leadership development, team building, and community service. They had a blast strengthening their SFT community by working together to complete a series of games and fun activities!
Rise is the anchor program of a broader $1 billion philanthropic commitment from Eric and Wendy Schmidt to identify and support global talent. It is premised on the idea that brilliance can be identified in youth by ages 15–17, according to Schmidt Futures co-founder Eric Schmidt.
Launched in April 2021, Qisasna is Amideast’s first program to receive funding from the Stevens Initiative, an international effort that aims to build global competence and career readiness skills for youth in the United States and the Middle East and North Africa. Funded by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, the initiative focuses on growing and enhancing the field of virtual exchange.
In 2021, to mark the 75th Anniversary of the Fulbright Program, Amideast announced a special edition of the ACAG program. Seven past ACAG recipients from Iraq, Jordan, Libya, Morocco, and Yemen were selected to implement a new round of ACAG projects in diverse areas such as public health, STEM education, community planning, English language teaching, and creative expression through the arts – with a focus on providing this enrichment to underserved communities.
