The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) defines six proficiency levels—A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, and C2—ranging from beginner to advanced. As of January 2026, TOEFL iBT score reports will include a new 1–6 banded score, reported in half-point increments, aligned with the CEFR to support clearer and more intuitive score interpretation.
The overall score will be calculated as the average of the four section scores, rounded to the nearest half band (for example, an average score of 5.25 will be reported as 5.5).
For a two-year transition period beginning in January 2026, score reports will display both the 1–6 banded scale and the traditional 0–120 TOEFL iBT scale
