The Right Path. Right from the Start.

The TOEFL Primary Reading and Listening tests assess students’ knowledge, skills and abilities to fulfill core communication goals in English and are offered at two levels of proficiency — Step 1 and Step 2. Questions are presented in a multiple-choice format and are paper or digitally delivered. These assessments pinpoint students' strengths and challenges, which informs placement and helps teachers and parents monitor progress.

TOEFL Primary is designed to measure early learners’ English-language skills and guide them to the next steps of learning. 

TOEFL Primary Reading and Listening Test — Step 1

Intended for students in the earlier stages of English learning, the test covers:

• Familiar contexts
• Basic formulaic expressions
• Basic vocabulary and phrases
• Simple requests and directions
• Basic text relevant to everyday experiences

TOEFL Primary® scores are mapped to CEFR levels, ranging from below A1 to B1, helping measure young learners’ English proficiency in a global context.

Test Format and Content

The TOEFL Primary Step 1 test is an online assessment. The assessment is divided into 2 sections taken at the same time. The test takes about 1 hour total. The score range is 101-109 

As an option, test takers can take Speaking and Writing modules.  

Those two sections are administered digitally. Each speaking and writing section is scored independently. Scores range from 0 to 27 for speaking and 0 to17 for writing.  

TOEFL Primary Reading and Listening Test — Step 2

Designed for students who have acquired some communicative English skills, it covers:

• Basic expressions
• Phrases and directions
• Simple short stories and conversations
• Unfamiliar words presented with context clues
• Simple content-based texts

TOEFL Primary® scores are mapped to CEFR levels, ranging from below A1 to B1, helping measure young learners’ English proficiency in a global context. 

Test Format and content

The TOEFL Primary Step 2 test is administered digitally in about 1 hour. The assessment is divided into 2 sections taken at the same time.  The score range is 104-115 

As an option, test takers can take Speaking and Writing modules.  Those two sections are administered digitally. Each section is scored independently. Scores range from 0 to 27 for speaking and 0 to 17 for writing.
