EXPANDING OPTIONS FOR ONLINE TRAINING AND EDUCATION

The Covid-19 pandemic propelled Amideast Online to the forefront of our efforts to ensure that we continued to meet training needs — whether for Americans in our Education Abroad programs or to meet the immediate needs of our large regional community for education and training — during this difficult period. Our online platform and learning management system not only proved itself up to meeting the moment, it ensured that it is here to stay by showing us that we can reach underserved audiences, whether those who lack the financial resources for education abroad, or who have physical disabilities, or live in locations remote from our offices.

ADVANCING STEM AWARENESS AND SKILLS

Recognizing that that science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) education is key to the future of the region’s youth, we began to introduce STEM-focused programming designed to equip young learners with knowledge and skills that will help them better respond to the changing needs of the global economy and contribute to their countries’ economic development through innovative ideas that create impact. An important milestone was the establishment — with generous funding from Boeing — of the STEM Center at Amideast/Cairo, offering inquiry-based learning programs that foster creativity and problem-solving skills in STEM through experimentation and inquiry-based learning programs.

PROMOTING YOUTH INNOVATION

Amideast partnered with Pittsburgh-based Inventionland and its subsidiary, the Inventionland Institute, to offer the Inventionland Institute’s comprehensive curriculum — available in English and Arabic — to enhance academic offerings at schools, universities, and youth centers by educating instructors and students about creative design, collaborative learning, problem-solving, and the inventing process. An initial collaborative project in Jordan not only enabled 100 young Jordanians to develop new product ideas, one invention — a silicon-based lid for beverage containers called “The Amazing Lid” — was selected for commercialization.
