What is CLEP?
The College-Level Examination Program® (CLEP), developed by the College Board, offers 34 exams covering introductory-level college course material. By earning a passing score on a CLEP exam, students can receive three or more college credits at over 3,000 U.S. colleges and universities and satisfy local requirements for secondary American high school diploma acceptance.
Designed with flexibility and accessibility at its core, CLEP supports a diverse learner ecosystem—including traditional students, working professionals, and lifelong learners—by reducing time to degree completion and lowering overall education costs.
With exams spanning disciplines such as business, composition, mathematics, science, and the humanities, CLEP aligns with institutional credit policies across thousands of colleges and universities.
CLEP Exams (College-Level Examination Program®) are standardized tests that allow students to earn college credit by demonstrating mastery of introductory-level college course material. They cover a wide range of subjects—from business and math to science and the humanities—and provide a fast, flexible, and cost-effective way to accelerate academic progress.
They are recognized by over 3,000 U.S. colleges and universities, enabling learners to bypass certain courses and move more quickly toward degree completion.
CLEP exams support university admissions by demonstrating that a student has mastered college-level material, which can strengthen applications and show academic readiness.
They may allow students to earn advanced placement or satisfy course prerequisites, helping accelerate degree progress.
CLEP scores also reflect self-motivation and preparedness and provide non-traditional or transfer students a way to showcase prior learning, making them a valuable tool in the admissions process.
CLEP exams will be available for students until September 2026, after which they will be discontinued. In 2026, exams will be offered per subject during the March/April and July/August testing windows.
Arrive at least 30 minutes prior to your exam time, bring a valid government-issued ID (passport recommended), and admission ticket (this can be downloaded from your collegeboard.org/clep account).
