How Film and Physics Took Me from Egypt to the Stars

Both of my parents were journalists in Egypt and I’ve always been curious about exploration. This sparked my interest in astronomy and film. I was in a STEM high school and fascinated by astrophysics – matter and galaxies – all of which tell the stories of the universe. At the same time, I was doing documentary work on the streets of Cairo and connecting to people through film and photographs.

I knew I’d have to go to the U.S. to pursue a double major. I was part of Education USA’s Competitive College Club when I learned of and applied for Amideast’s MENA Scholarship Support Fund (MSSF). Today, I’m a fourth-year student at Franklin & Marshall College studying media and astrophysics.

Coming from the MENA region, I’m also passionate about how marginalized communities can be more powerfully represented on screen. In my Revolutionary Cinema studies, I’ve explored how visual storytelling can raise social awareness and challenge stereotypes. One day, I hope to create educational outreach films incorporating immersive simulations—something that combines the cosmic wonder of astrophysics with a culturally resonant, Arabic-language perspective inspired by Neil deGrasse Tyson’s style. By blending scientific accuracy with inclusive storytelling, I aim to engage broader audiences and empower those who have historically been overlooked.

Ultimately, I plan to pursue my PhD and possibly become a professor, where I can continue to explore the vast mysteries of the cosmos while inspiring others to expand their horizons and step beyond their comfort zones. Both in astrophysics and in film, I am deeply committed to the idea of making the invisible visible—whether it’s uncovering the hidden wonders of the universe or shedding light on the untold stories of marginalized communities.

As an international student, the journey has been challenging yet incredibly rewarding. It has opened doors to life-changing opportunities and exposed me to new ways of thinking. My advice to others is simple: never give up. Embrace the challenges, be true to yourself, and push yourself toward the horizons you’re passionate about—it’s all part of the exploration.
