What is Access?

US State Department Scholarships are awarded through the Access program to deserving Tunisian students aged 13-15 from underprivileged economic environments who would not normally benefit from English language reinforcement.  Along with English training, this program also introduces and/or strengthens the students' awareness of cross-cultural similarities and differences through democratic, national and community themes and activities.  These students are nominated and endorced by their school directors as to their character, commitment, academic promise and need.

Why Access is Important?

With the growing importance of the Enlgish language around the globe, the Access program focuses on those who could potentially be left behind in the race for fluency through no fault of their own, but through lack of opportunity.  Additional English training and language competencies open doors to higher education and employment that would remain closed to an under-served population.  As well as increased concrete language skills, the program promotes the softer skills of team-work, problem-solving and critical analysis.

What Access Does

US Embassy sponsored Access classes are offered outside of the academic day, after school, on Saturday or daily during the summer, all year round for a total of 360 hours of language training and cultural enhancement over the period of 2 years.  The cultural component highlights the Tunisian perspective both past and present, introduces and stresses giving back to the nation and the community and celebrates US similarities and differences with Tunisia.

What is the Impact of Access?

AMIDEAST/Tunisia has been implementing Access programs since 2004.  To date approximately 600 students have taken part in Access.  Tunis has 45 students who have just finished 360 hours of the 2 year program and are slated to graduate in August.  Sousse will start a new Access program for 45 students soon.

Access Stories

The Tunisian Revolution presented the backdrop for several moving Access stories; about the pride that these students have of their country and their dreams for the future through designing their own 'Proud to be a Tunisian' T-shirts; their I Have a Dream essays, their romp through Rap and performances of individual rap compositions alongside celebrity Tunisian Rappers and the first-ever Access camp in Tunis.
