Reduce, Reuse and Recycle

By applying STEM concepts to environmental education, the “Reduce, Reuse and Recycle” program fosters in teachers and students a deeper awareness of environmental issues and knowledge of different ways to address them.
Egyptian  youth addressing environmental challenges using STEM

The program, initially offered at the STEM Center with funding from the U.S. Embassy in Cairo, equips students with the knowledge and skill sets of the 21st century to become active participants and make a change.

The program's goals are to:

  • Develop students’ critical thinking and problem-solving skills through STEM education
  • Increase awareness of environmental issues among children and youth
  • Raise awareness of career opportunities that are available in STEM fields

PROGRAM DETAILS:

STEM JUNIOR PROGRAMS

The Science of Recycling “Think Green” (AGE 8-15)

  • Introduction to waste separation & waste management
  • Introduction to the waste recycling process & common pollution types
  • Art Production using waste material
  • The impact of different products on the environment 

LEGO® Education (Age 8-12)

  • LEGO Education WeDo 2.0
  • Working models of powered machines demonstration
  • Science, Engineering, technology, and coding engagement
  • Building, programming, and modifying different projects

STEM PLUS PROGRAMS    

Graphics, Animation & 3D printing (AGE 16-22)

  • Introduction to basic and advanced techniques of motion graphics
  • Introduction to animation, after effects interface, keyframes, layer properties, time and space relations motion paths, kinetic typography, Adobe Illustrator basics, text animation and expressions,
  • Introduction to 3D animations, and introduction to 3D and using 3D printers to build prototypes"             

Programming & Web development (AGE 16-22)

  • Introduction to Web technology, HTML, JavaScript, responsive and mobile CSS, summary of PHP language, and Python programming language
  • Introduction to user experience, WordPress, and using web development to launch projects
  • Introduction to Arduino

Environmental Engineering (AGE 16-22)

  • Introduction to various pollution sources, water quality issues and various water filtration processes
  • Introduction to the effects of water contamination on body & health
  • Introduction to Environmental Engineering & water management
  • Water filter designs

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA:

  • Egyptian nationals residing in Greater Cairo
  • Age between 8-22 years old
  • Enrolled in school/ college
  • Interested in different STEM fields
  • Interested in Environmental issues 
  • Willing to fully commit to the duration of the program

*Preference will be given to underprivileged children and youth in public governmental schools and universities with demonstrable STEM interest, academic excellence, and engagement in extracurricular activities

REQUIRED DOCUMENTS:

  • A recent photo
  • A scanned copy of your birth certificate
  • A scanned copy of your national ID
  • If the address written in the form is different than the national ID, please provide any proof of residence.
  • A scanned copy of parent national ID
  • A scanned copy of the recent grade report
  • A recommendation letter from one of your teachers/ professors
  • A scanned copy of Certificate of Achievement or recognition for academic training or community service (if available)
  • English Proficiency tests scores (If available)
