New AMIDEAST Publication Focuses on Education and Training in Egypt
Washington, DC—March 10, 2008. What skills do Egyptian youth need as Egypt seeks to compete in the global marketplace? How best can they train for managerial positions and vocational jobs? What is the role of international educational linkages as Egypt seeks to meet the educational needs of its youth in the context of a growing economy?
AMIDEAST is pleased to release Egyptian Education and Training for the Global Economy, a112- page book that presents the views of American and Egyptian leaders in business, education, and government as they discuss these and other critical questions that frame the educational challenges facing Egypt as it enters the global economy of the 21st century. Their views were presented during a symposium hosted by AMIDEAST in Cairo to mark the 50th anniversary of the opening of its office in Egypt in 1956.
“Education and training hold the key to the future of the Middle East. What better way for AMIDEAST to celebrate its milestone anniversary in Egypt than to hold a discussion that focuses our attention once again on the critical importance of knowledge as the driver of progress, in Egypt and throughout the region,” noted Ambassador Theodore Kattouf, AMIDEAST’s president and CEO.
The volume covers the remarks of a range of speakers, including Egypt’s First Lady Suzanne Mubarak; then-U.S. Assistant Secretary of State Dina Habib Powell; Dr. Taher Helmy, president of the American Chamber of Commerce in Egypt; Dr. Ahmed Galal, adviser to the World Bank in Cairo; Mr.Helmy Abouleish, managing director of the SEKEM Group; Mr. Moataz Al-Alfi, chairman and CEO of Americana Group and vice chairman of the Future Generation Foundation; Dr. Hossam Badrawi, chairman of the Nile Badrawi Group and a former member of the Egyptian Parliament, Dr. Dell Felder, an associate with the RAND Corporation; Mr. David Arnold, president of the American University in Cairo; Dr. Sherif Kamel, professor of management at the American University in Cairo; and Dr. Ismail Serageldin, director of the Alexandria Library.
