ANNOUNCEMENT: Call For Applications

Nexen Inc.’s
Yemen Scholarship Program
Sponsoring Yemeni Scholars to Study in Canada

As a reflection of friendship and commitment to assist in Yemen’s human resource development, Nexen Inc. is pleased to announce an additional 10 scholarships for post-secondary studies at the University of Calgary in Calgary, Canada. Nexen’s Yemen Scholarship Program was originally initiated to celebrate the company’s 10th anniversary in Yemen. A total of 110 scholarships have been awarded to deserving Yemeni secondary school graduates to date. The ten scholarships will be awarded by Nexen Inc. and the Scholarship Steering Committee in January 2010.

  1. The ten scholarship recipients will commence their respective study programs in September 2010 or September 2011. Start date will be dependent on the recipient’s level of English-language proficiency.

  2. Post-secondary study programs currently available for the Nexen Scholarship competition:

      • B.Sc – Electrical Engineering*
      • B.Sc – Civil Engineering*
      • B.Sc – Chemical Engineering*
      • B.Sc – Mechanical Engineering*
      • B.Sc – Manufacturing Engineering*
      • B.Sc – Mathematics
      • B.Sc – Geophysics
      • B.Sc – Computer Science
      • B.Sc – Health Science

        *B.Sc. Engineering Applicants can choose to undertake a specialization in Biomedical Engineering.


  3. To qualify for a Nexen Scholarship, all applicants must:

    • Be a Yemeni citizen residing in Yemen for the past two years;
    • Be between 17-22 years of age;
    • Possess the secondary school certificate (Al-Thanawiyyah Al-Aama) from the Yemeni Ministry of Education;
    • Have a minimum overall average of 85 percent on his/her secondary school certificate;
    • Possess English-language abilities sufficient for study abroad or be willing to commit to Yemen-based English-language training for up to two years;
    • Not already have a scholarship from the Republic of Yemen;
    • Be committed to returning to Yemen after completion of  his/her  studies in Canada; and
    • Submit all the required documents that are requested in this announcement.


    Selection Process:

    Candidate selection will be based on high academic achievement, possession of English language abilities,  and a personal interview.  The University of Calgary will not grant formal admission to its institution until the scholarship recipient achieves a minimum TOEFL score of  220 (computer based exam), 560 (paper based exam) and 83 (iBT). Applicants who are in a position to sit for the TOEFL/ITP exam are encouraged to do so prior to submitting their applications.  In order to broaden the accessibility of the Nexen Scholarship program, high-achieving Yemeni secondary students from rural areas who have not been able to access necessary English language training, are given the opportunity to complete intensive English language training at AMIDEAST Sana’a or Aden (fully paid for by Nexen) if selected as a Nexen scholarship recipient.

    • Copy of secondary school grades or transcript
    • Copy of  personal ID card or passport

  6. Completed application forms and requested documentation must be returned in a sealed envelope to any of the above noted application distribution/collection centers. Failure to comply with any of the information requirements will result in disqualification.

  7. The closing date for accepting applications is 4:00 PM, Wednesday, November 11, 2009.  Under no circumstances will applications be accepted after this date.
