Autism afflicts one out of every 100 to 166 children and it affects the lives of many children and their families (DiCicco-Bloom et al, 2006). It tends to affect about five boys to every one girl (First, 2008).

Can you identify autistic children in your classroom? Do you know what to look out for? Would you know the difference in the behavior of an autistic child as opposed to one that was suffering from Asperger Syndrome?

Did you know that children with autism often are unable to use gestures-such as pointing to an object- to give meaning  to their speech? They often avoid eye contact, which can make them seem rude, uninterested, or attentive. Without meaningful gestures or the language to communicate, many children with autism become frustrated in their attempts to make their feelings and needs known. They may act out their frustrations through vocal outbursts or other inappropriate behaviors.

Our workshop on autism will be presented by Ms. Nada Haddad, a Special Needs Specialist. She will give you an overview of this learning disability, how to identify it, and practical ways in which you can get such children to be an integrated part of the classroom environment. Through case studies you will gain additional knowledge that will help you include these children so that none are left behind.

The optimal treatment for autism involves and educational program that is best suited to the developmental levels of the child. Only a specialist would be able to pass on that knowledge showing you how to adapt each program to different children, of varying developmental levels.

Join our wokshop. Be informed. Be empowered. Be effective.
