Kennedy-Lugar Youth Exchange and Study (YES) Program is a program funded through the U.S. Department of State and sponsored by the Bureau of Educational & Cultural Affairs (ECA) to provide scholarships for Tunisian high school students (15-17 years old) to spend up to one academic year in the U.S.

Students live with host families, attend high school, engage in activities to learn about American society and values, acquire leadership skills, and help educate Americans about their country and culture. The YES program is a merit-based competition open to students who would not traditionally have access to American Secondary education and who exhibit academic excellence, leadership potential, and a desire to enhance relations between the United States and their home countries.

 As a YES student, you will have the opportunity to:

  • Live with an American family 
  • Study at a U.S. high school 
  • Participate in a youth leadership training program 
  • Experience U.S. culture and society first-hand 
  • Improve your English 
  • Make new friends 
  • Help Americans learn about your country

Expenses covered by the YES Program

  • Airfare
  • Room and board
  • Health insurance
  • Pocket money – stipend of $125 USD per month
  • Educational supplies

Eligibility

Kennedy-Lugar YES Program eligibility requirements:

  1. Students should have a record of high academic achievement.
  2. Students must be between 15 and 17 years old by the time the program begins, next August 2014, and must be currently enrolled in the First or Second year of secondary school (Tunisian Educational System), in Troisième or Seconde (French Educational System).
  3. Students should demonstrate flexibility and commitment to promoting cross cultural understanding.
  4. Students should have leadership qualities.
  5. Students should meet the English proficiency requirement.
  6. Students must not be U.S. citizens or permanent residents, and were not born in the United States.

The Kennedy Lugar YES Experience

 

"YES students will be able to attend public schools and participate in various activities

 

 The “Kennedy Lugar YES program not only introduces the American culture to students from all over the Arab World but also allows them to be ambassadors of their own countries.

 

Information Sessions:

AMIDEAST/Tunis: Friday November 15, from 2:00 to 3:00 PM

Space of Wisdom/ Sfax: Wednesday November 20, from 6:00 to 6:45 PM

AMIDEAST/Sousse: Friday November 22, from 2:00 to 3:00 PM

 

Deadline: The complete application dossier must be submitted to AMIDEAST Tunis/Sousse no later than January 7th, 2014

 

How to apply?

  1. Complete an AMIDEAST YES Preliminary Application
  2. Provide a completed recommendation letter by a teacher (click here to download the form)
  3. Provide a high school registration certificate 
  4. Provide certified true copies of the official annual grade transcripts of the last three years 
  5. Provide a current passport-size photo.

Incomplete applications will NOT be considered.

Pre-selected students will sit for an English SLEP test and only students who get a score of 45 or more on the test will sit for the TOEFL Junior test (http://www.ets.org/toefl_junior).
Final selection will be based on the application, grades, essays, test scores and interviews conducted by a local review panel.
