Mission and Objectives
The Middle East Rule of Law (MEROL) program aims to assist in the creation of a critical mass of reform-minded professionals in the Middle East working in fields crucial to the development and sustainability of open societies.
In conceiving of the foundations of the “Rule of Law” to include the healthy functioning of various public sectors beyond law itself, MEROL represents an extension of the Open Society Foundations’ Palestinian Rule of Law Program (PROL). Since 2003, the PROL program has supported over 50 LLM fellowships for Palestinian lawyers who are now engaged in law reform, teaching, and the development of a Palestinian rule of law infrastructure.
The Open Society Foundations, with support from AMIDEAST/Lebanon, is offering several scholarships for master’s degrees for students and professionals currently residing in Lebanon. OSF is also providing a 5-month research and/or publication grant for Lebanese and Syrian professors in the field of Humanities and Social Sciences.

The Open Society Foundations / University of Nottingham scholarship aims to provide opportunities for independent postgraduate study in the United Kingdom for students who have demonstrated both academic excellence and the potential to become leaders, decision-makers and opinion formers in their own country. Upon completion of their studies in the UK, scholars are expected to return to their home country to resume their studies or work there. Subject to satisfactory progress, the scholarships lead to the award of a Master’s degree.
