For nearly two decades AMIDEAST has been engaged in efforts to improve and reform legal and judicial services in the Middle East and North Africa. These efforts have included, among other things, efforts to advance the inclusion of women in the judiciary and legal professions in the region.
Through technical training, integration of new technology and administrative systems, and professional development, AMIDEAST has worked to professionalize the judiciary and promote greater transparency and accountability in this important public sector.
A major focus of AMIDEAST's efforts is the design and implementation of education, educational reform, and capacity building programs.
Over the last 53 years, more than three million students, teachers, government officials, and professionals have benefited from AMIDEAST-administered education and professional development programs at the university, as well as the primary and secondary levels.
This four-year program launched by USAID will phase in a student-centered, contemporary approach to teaching and learning—improving student learning outcomes in 57 schools in the West Bank and extending opportunities to 12 schools and over 2,000 students in Gaza. [ + ]
Training of mid- and senior-level management in modern approaches to public administration is making a difference in the public sector’s capacity to deliver services to citizens and meet their concerns.
Over the last decade AMIDEAST has implemented a number of programs directed at strengthening government efficiency, openness, and transparency.
AMIDEAST trainers worked with four ministries to improve management and financial systems, helping to establish a Public Administration and Human Resource Development Center to train civil servants. Research and recommendations from this project led to the passage of a uniform Civil Service Reform package.
Training, technical assistance, and grants are helping to build the capacity of citizens to engage in their local communities. Working with local partners and non-governmental organizations, AMIDEAST has implemented programs to promote citizen awareness, youth engagement, and the rights of women, children, and handicapped citizens, among other issues.
Societies require effective public and private institutions in order to meet the social, economic and civic needs of their people. Programs focused on building the capacity of institutions to effectively implement their missions and respond to local demand for quality services are at the heart of successful development.
We are working with local, regional, and international partners to assist efforts to strengthen and build institutional capacity across the Middle East and North Africa region. These efforts are concentrated in four vital areas: education, legal and judicial reform, public administration, and civil society.
