What is the USMLE?

The U.S. Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) is a three-step examination program that is a prerequisite for U.S. medical licensure. Step 1 focuses on key concepts of basic biomedical science. Step 2 examines medical knowledge of clinical science essential for the provision of patient care under supervision. Step 3 (offered only in the United States) focuses on physician tasks and clinical encounters.

Steps 1 and 2 of the examination are offered outside the United States and are required by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG®) as part of their certification program. ECFMG certification assesses whether graduates of medical schools outside the United States are prepared to undertake residency or fellowship programs in the United States.

What is CLEP?

The College Level Examination Program (CLEP) allows you to obtain recognition for college-level achievement on examinations and earn credits in undergraduate degree programs and universities in the United States and overseas.

Wherever or however you have learned and no matter what your age, you can take CLEP exams.  If the results are acceptable to your college or university, you may receive course credit, thus shortening a degree program or allowing you to begin with more advanced courses than would otherwise be possible.

CLEP offers examinations in thirty-four different subject areas.  Each exam is ninety minutes in length.

How do I get credit for CLEP

Contact the admissions office of the college or university that you are interested in attending.  They can tell you if they are among the 2,900 institutions that accept CLEP examinations for credit or advanced standing, as well as which examinations they accept, the scores they require, and the number of credit hours that they grant for each examination that you pass successfully.
