How Your Institution Can Use the ITP
Two English language proficiency tests
are offered through the Institutional Testing
Program (ITP)the TOEFL
ITP, designed for
intermediate and advanced students of English,
and the Pre-TOEFL, for beginning- to intermediate-level
students. The tests are based on past editions
of paper-based TOEFL tests, making them
an excellent assessment and learning tool
for individuals who will eventually be taking
the TOEFL.
Both the TOEFL ITP and the Pre-TOEFL are
multiple-choice tests that measure listening
comprehension, structure and written expression,
and reading comprehension. The Pre-TOEFL
also includes vocabulary questions. The
TOEFL ITP takes 115 minutes to complete
while the Pre-TOEFL takes 70 minutes.
AMIDEAST is authorized by the Educational
Testing Service to administer TOEFL ITP
and Pre-TOEFL tests to individuals or to
groups. For all ITP testing at AMIDEAST,
rapid scoring and reporting services are
provided. Test administrators can expect
to receive score results within one week
after an ITP administration.
English language training programs; schools,
universities, and educational institutions
that teach primarily in a language other
than English; and organizations and agencies
use the ITP to
Assess applicant English language ability
for study abroad or work assignments
Place students in English language classes
at the appropriate level of difficulty
Demonstrate progress made by students
in an English language program
Evaluate overall program effectiveness
Provide students an opportunity to become
acquainted with the multiple-choice test
format
Since the ITP is based on TOEFL tests
that have been administered in the past,
it may not be used as a basis for admission
by institutions where English is the primary
language of instruction, or as a substitute
for the regular International TOEFL.
