TOEFL®
The Test of English as a Foreign Language
(TOEFL) evaluates the English proficiency
of people whose native language is not English.
Most U.S. universities require that international
applicants take the TOEFL. Generally, a
score of 500 to 550 on the paper-based version
is required for admission to undergraduate
and graduate programs in the United States,
with graduate schools expecting the higher
scores.
TOEFL content includes multiple-choice
questions testing listening, structure and
grammar, and reading, as well as the Test
of Written English (TWE), which is now incorporated
into the TOEFL as an essay section measuring
writing skills.
The AMIDEAST/Iraq office in Erbil and AMIDEAST
representatives in Baghdad and Basra maintain
a supply of test bulletins with all pertinent
information about the TOEFL, including the
registration form.
Information on the exam content and registration
procedures is also available at the TOEFL
Web site.

Test-takers with access to the internet and an international credit card may register for the paper-based test at the TOEFL Web site. The registration fee is $150. Note that for students registering at the web site, it is necessary to provide a postal address to which scores can be mailed from the United States.
Students may also register locally through AMIDEAS/Iraq and scores can be sent to Iraq through AMIDEAST, for pick-up by students in Baghdad, Basra and Erbil.
To register locally please visit:
- The AMIDEAST office in Erbil. Registration sessions are held every Thursday from 12noon to 4pm. The office is located in Erbil at the Ainkawa Neighborhood close to Italiano Restaurant. Local phone number 22 50 054.

- The AMIDEAST/Iraq representative in Basra at the University of Basra/Bab Al-Zubair Compound at the Institution of Live Languages in the ITP TOEFL Test Center every Monday from 9am to 1pm.
Students will need to review and sign the local registration student agreement, complete a paper registration form, and pay the $200 fee in cash ($150 for the test plus $50 for the local registration service that AMIDEAST provides).
IMPOTTANT NOTES:
- REGISTRATION FOR THE OFFICIAL TOEFL TEST MUST BE DONE BY THE TEST-TAKER IN PERSON. NO ONE ELSE CAN REGISTER ON BEHALF OF THE TEST-TAKER, NO EXCEPTIONS!
- THERE ARE NO EXCEPTIONS REGARDING THE LOCAL REGISTRATION DEADLINES (Registration via AMIDEAST/Iraq).
In order to facilitate communication, we require all students using the local registration service to obtain an e-mail address. AMIDEAST/Iraq staff rely primarily on e-mail for communication with students about testing issues.
It is important for you to be familiar
with the kinds of questions asked on the
TOEFL. There are several ways to prepare.
- Arrive at your assigned test center
at least 30 minutes before the assigned
test time. Check-in procedures take time.
If you arrive late, you may not be admitted
to the test, and you will forfeit your
test fees.
- Bring photobearing identification, as
described in the TOEFL Information
Bulletin.
- Bring your test confirmation information.
If you registered using AMIDEAST?s local
registration service, your scores will be
mailed from ETS to AMIDEAST?s headquarters
in Washington, DC, and shipped via TNT to
AMIDEAST/Iraq, where you can pick them up.
Scores should be available for pick up in
Baghdad, Basra and Erbil six to eight weeks
after the test date. For students who registered
through the TOEFL Web site, their official
scores will be mailed five weeks after the
test date, from the United States, to the
postal address provided at the time of registration.
If you need score reports to be sent to
additional institutions, please complete
the form in the TOEFL bulletin and return
it with payment to ETS. If paying by credit
card, you may also call ETS at +1-609-771-7267
to order additional score reports. TOEFL
scores are valid for two years from the
date they are issued.
Questions about any missing score reports
should be directed to Educational Testing
Service (ETS), the nonprofit organization
that develops TOEFL and issues score reports.
An e-mail sent to the ETS customer service
address toefl@ets.org
usually will receive a response in five
to seven days. Test takers should wait at
least eight weeks before contacting ETS
about score reports. Score report problems
are best avoided by careful preparation
of the registration form. |
