What is the CLEP?

The College Level Examination Program (CLEP) may allow you to obtain recognition for college-level achievement on examinations and earn credits in undergraduate degree programs and universities in the United States and overseas.

Wherever or however you have learned and no matter what your age, you can take CLEP exams. If the results are acceptable to your college or university, you may receive course credit, thus shortening a degree program or allowing you to begin with more advanced courses than would be possible otherwise.

CLEP offers examinations in thirty-four different subject areas. Each exam is ninety minutes in length.

How do I get credit for CLEP examinations?

Contact the admissions office of the college or university that you are interested in attending. They can tell you if they are among the 2,900 institutions that accept CLEP examinations for credit or advanced standing, as well as which examinations they accept, the scores they require, and the number of credit hours that they grant for each examination that you pass successfully.

The CLEP Colleges brochure also lists colleges that have accepted CLEP, but always check directly with the institution for the most complete and current information. Click here to download the CLEP Colleges brochure in PDF format from the College Board Web site.

You need the free Adobe Acrobat Reader plugin to view PDF files. Click here to download Adobe Acrobat Reader.

Where do I get a CLEP handbook?

Test handbooks and registration materials for the CLEP examinations may be available by request from AMIDEAST. Contact us for more information.

Information on the CLEP program and examinations is also available on the CLEP Web site.

Where and when can I take CLEP examinations?

The CLEP examinations are offered by arrangement with AMIDEAST at AMIDEAST test centers throughout the Middle East and North Africa.

How do I register for CLEP exams?

Please contact your local AMIDEAST office for registration and payment information. You will be asked to pay a test fee and a service fee for each examination for which you register. You can download the test registration form (in PDF format) from the CLEP registration website.

How do I prepare for CLEP exams?

It is important for you to be familiar with the types of questions asked on the CLEP exams. There are several ways to prepare.

  • Read about the tests and suggested preparation methods on the CLEP Web site
  • Purchase the CLEP Official Study Guide and relevant Individual Subject Study Guides for more practice and review
  • Take a subject review and test preparation course
What do I do on the day of the test?
  • Arrive at your test center at least 30 minutes before the assigned test time. Check-in procedures take time. If you arrive late, you may not be admitted to the test, and you will forfeit your test fees.
  • Bring photobearing identification, as described in the CLEP handbook, along with your test center admission form.

What about my scores?

At the end of a testing session, the computer program will offer you the option to cancel or report your test score. If you choose to report your score, you will receive a printed score report from the test center administrator.

If you take the English Composition with Essay exam, the essay will need to be hand scored, and you will not receive a score report on the day of the test. Essays are scored once a month, after which your scores will be sent to you.

At the time you take the exam, you can indicate in test software the college, employer, or certifying agency that you want to receive your CLEP test scores. There is no additional cost for this service—your exam fee covers it. The Educational Testing Service will send oneofficial score report to your designated score recipient within two days of receiving your candidate data from the test center. You may requset additional score reports for a small fee.
