YES Alumni Commemorate
Land Day
For some of the new '07 YES students,
this project was their first community service venture. "In
this day I experienced something special for the first time
in my life," Mohammed said about his first volunteer
experience. "I found a new way to benefit my community
when I went to plant trees. First, I found it weird to go
and to plant trees in a place that I had never been to and
maybe I would never go to again. Then after planting some
trees I realized the purpose of doing such a thing: That a
man who does not affect this earth is nothing." Nizar
felt that the day put his community into a new perspective:
"Planting trees on our Land Day was an amazing thing
because it made me and my friends feel more possessive of
our country and appreciate it more than ever," he explained.
"This community service symbolizes our love for our country.
I wish that people would plant trees on the holiday and other
days to protect the environment."
