Open Society Institute
2010-2011 Palestinian Rule of Law Program
Announcement of LL.M. & Short-Term Faculty Fellowships in the U.S. and Hungary
The Open Society Institute’s Palestinian Rule of Law (PROL) Program is now accepting applications for LL.M. & Short-Term Faculty Visit Fellowships.
SHORT-TERM FACULTY VISIT FELLOWSHIPS (Up to 3 Scholarships Available)
The PROL Program’s Short-Term Fellowship component is a non-degree law faculty exchange program. Each year for up to two years, participants will spend one semester at a host U.S. law school. Fellows may not select their host universities. It is expected that most participants will stay at US law schools for a spring semester (four months), return to their home universities in the West Bank / Gaza for summer and fall, and then return to their US host law school the following spring. Grantees of the spring 2011 cohort will begin their first visits in January 2011.
Grantees will commit to developing a new course or courses (in consultation with academic mentors) to be taught at their home universities. All Short-Term Fellows will be required to fully participate in at least one course; visit classes to observe teaching methods; and review syllabi of host law school faculty. In addition, Short-Term Fellows may engage in legal research that will result in a publishable scholarly article. It is expected that Short-Term Fellows will also engage in other professional development activities, including the creation of official or unofficial linkages between the host law school and home university.
In 2009-2010, one short-term visiting faculty fellow is visiting at New York University.
LL.M. (MASTER OF LAWS) FELLOWSHIPS (Up to 5 Fellowships Available)
PROL LL.M. fellowships provide support for the completion of an LL.M. (Master of Laws) degree. Fellowships will be tenable at selected Law Schools in the United States and the Central European University (CEU) in Budapest, an OSI-affiliated institution providing American-style teaching and U.S.-accredited qualifications. In addition to the CEU, participating law schools for the 2009-2010 year included Georgetown University, the American University, Wake Forest University, and the University of Pittsburgh. PROL LLM fellowships may be extended for up to one year after the completion of the LLM degree to cover public sector internships or work placements at non-profit institutions.
LL.M. FINALIST-IN-TRAINING AWARDS (Up to 3 Awards Available) – (NEW!)
PROL Finalist-in-Training (FIT) Awards will provide support for up to 3 LL.M. fellowship applicants whose applications are exceptional but whose English skills are below the level necessary to successfully enter and complete a LL.M. degree program. All LL.M. fellowship applicants will be automatically considered for FIT awards. The awards will offer selected applicants the opportunity to undertake intensive English study in Palestine (coordinated by AMIDEAST) for 6-9 months in order to improve their competitiveness for the 2011-2012 PROL competition, in which FIT awardees will automatically qualify as semi-finalists.
Summer Pre-Academic / Pre-Host University Visit Program: All LLM fellows (and possibly some short-term faculty visit fellows) will attend a pre-academic summer course during the month of July 2010. Attendance costs will be covered by grantees’ fellowships.
Fellowship Benefits: University tuition (LLM Fellows), partial salary replacement (Short-Term Fellows), monthly living stipend (living expenses sufficient for a single grantee), travel costs, educational materials, professional development expenses, health insurance, and PROL US Fellows’ Conference expenses.
Requirements: LLM Fellowship applicants should have outstanding relevant academic qualifications (a BA in law or other law degree is required), professional aptitude and leadership potential. Short-Term Fellowship applicants should have outstanding academic qualifications, a BA in law or other law degree, and currently be a full or part-time law professor or instructor at a university or four-year college in the West Bank / Gaza. For a complete list of relevant eligibility requirements, please see the PROL Fellowship Program pre- and full applications.
