Help Others

With the help of a YES Mini-grant, El Mehdi El Fitr, class of '06, was inspired to begin a nonprofit organization which he called "Friends Involved in Helping Needy Students" or FIHNS, in his hometown of Laayoune, Morocco. The organization's objective is to help provide necessary school supplies to low income students before the start of each school year. Through this project, El Mehdi hopes to foster the value and spirit of community service among his fellow Moroccans.

According to El Mehdi, young, school-age children need greater attention and support by the local community since they are the future of the community. Poverty contributes to high illiteracy rates and El Mehdi notes that many parents of school-age children cannot afford the various hidden fees

YES Alumni Receive Sister Cities International Global Youth Leadership Award

The Youth Exchange and Study program (YES) recently received the "Global Youth Leadership Award" from Sister Cities International during its 50th Anniversary celebration and conference, held in July in Washington, D.C. Four YES alumni were chosen to attend the conference and accept the award on behalf of all of the students on the program. Maya Al-Kateb '04 from Syria, Hadeel Bayoumi '05 from Israel, Sherish Khan from Pakistan and Laith Hajarat '04 from Jordan were selected based on their leadership skills and the work they have done as alumni in their home communities.

The four also participated in the International Youth Summit on Global Leadership held at George Washington University from July 11-16.
