The Alumni organized a variety of activities in honor of “International Education Week” including delivering a lecture, participating in a satellite chat with leaders from the University of Tampa in Florida, and organizing an International Food
Tasting Day.

Abdulaziz Al-Mujalham `05, Faisal Hameed `06 Amnah Al-Baghle `06, Ali Assiri `07, Abduljalil Marafie `07, Ahmad Al-Foudery `07 and Farah Al-Qallaf `07, all shared their experiences as cultural ambassadors to a large audience. The event took place at AMIDEAST’s Kuwait field office and the alumni spoke about how they applied the skills they obtained on the YES program to positive change in their communities back home. Several attendees in the audience inquired how to apply to the YES program following the speeches. Two prominent speakers also addressed the audience: Dr. Khaled Mahdi and Mr. Hmoud Al-Sallal, both from Kuwait University. Dr. Khaled gave a presentation on, “Developing Global Skills through International Study” and Mr. Al Sallal gave a presentation on, “Organizing your time and thoughts”.

Faisal , Ali, Abduljalil, Ahmad and Farah, along with Nada Bedir`07 and Fatemah Al-Qabandi `07 participated in a Digital Video Conference (DVC) with the University of Tampa in Florida. The DVC was held on November 13th and was hosted by the Public Affairs Section of the U.S. Embassy. The alumni attended this event and interacted with the University of Tampa (UT) admissions officer, the Dean of Graduate Programs and UT students via satellite. Abdulaziz Al-Attal `05 participated as a UT student, where he was sitting on the other end of the DVC. He talked to the alumni in Kuwait about his experience with UT, life on campus, the difficulties he faced at the start of university life, and the campus based activities he is currently involved in. Discussion topics also included student life, visa procedures, academic programs and university admission policies.

Twelve alumni and seven English Access Microscholarship students participated in an International Food Tasting Day which was held at AMIDEAST on the 14th of November. The event involved sampling food from a variety of different countries, including: Morocco, Italy, Kuwait, Lebanon, China, and Japan. Each student was responsible for preparing a traditional national dish from a country of their choice. Each student went around the room and presented their dish and some facts about the country where the dish came from. Nisryne Azatour `07, who is originally from Morocco, prepared couscous which is a traditional Moroccan meal. Nisryne proudly informed the guests, “Couscous is usually prepared each Friday in Morocco and it is the national dish of my country.”

The YES scholarship program is funded by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Cultural and Educational Affairs and administered by several organizations.
