Strengthening Civil Society
Training, technical assistance, and grants are helping to build the capacity of citizens to engage in their local communities. Working with local partners and non-governmental organizations, AMIDEAST has implemented programs to promote citizen awareness, youth engagement, and the rights of women, children, and handicapped citizens, among other issues.
Examples of project experience include:
Transparency and Accountability Grants (TAG) PROJECT, LEBANON
Since 2001, the AMIDEAST-administered, USAID-funded TAG Project has made it possible for a broad spectrum of Lebanese nongovernmental organizations to engage in short-term, high-impact activities that promote transparency, accountability, and good governance, while also contributing to a stronger civil society sector. TAMKEEN (“Empowerment”), WEST BANK/GAZA
Launched in 2000, this six-year USAID-funded grants program helped increase the participation of Palestinian civil society organizations in public discourse and contributed to preserving the crucial interface between citizens and their public representatives.
NGO Advocacy Project, MOROCCO
In 2001, AMIDEAST providing training to the leaders of 14 Moroccan nongovernmental organizations in advocacy and management techniques that enabled them to increase their ability to engage the government and public on reform and human rights issues
New Voices Speaking Out!
This Ford Foundation project administered during 1999 helped young professionals working in the non-profit community to develop leadership and managerial skills to be more effective leaders in Egyptian civil society.
