AMIDEAST invites girls in Grade 11 or 12 in the Muscat Region to apply for an after-school program that will build leadership and career skills, provide opportunities to learn about global issues, and facilitate community service activities.
Funded by the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands and managed by AMIDEAST, the Global Leaders Scholarship Program will allow 30 Omani girls to participate in a six-month after-school program that includes:
*Note: Girls selected for the program will need to pay a 30 OMR deposit. At the successful completion of the program, the full amount will be returned to the student. Students and families who have difficulty with the deposit amount can request a waiver. Waivers are given in increments of 50% and 100%.
In addition to the after-school sessions, eight (8) students will be selected to attend the Global Issues Network (GIN) Conference in Abu Dhabi, UAE from February 3 – 5, 2011. The students will be accompanied to the conference by AMIDEAST chaperones. More information is available at: http://acs.sch.ae/globalissues. Students will be selected to attend the conference based on their application answers, essay, interview and instructor input.
Component Descriptions:
Model United Nations Club
By enabling the students to participate in a Model United Nations (MUN) Club, AMIDEAST will provide them with opportunities to build their research, critical thinking, writing and presentation skills, and to expose them to a wide variety of international issues. Participants will also learn about the skills of teamwork, debating, advocacy and negotiation, and will enhance their self-esteem and their prospects for success in a globalized economy.
Community Service
Oman is increasingly looking at ways to encourage individuals as well as organizations to participate in community service. There is a growing awareness of the need to be responsible, caring citizens – not only of the Sultanate, but of the world. AMIDEAST aims to give students an opportunity for firsthand experience with community service by enabling them to identify issues of concern, research them, develop strategies to address them, and then implement action plans. The issues addressed could be local or global, but in either case, the students will have opportunities to link up with others involved in tackling those issues.
Career Development
Working to build students’ goal-setting and problem-solving skills, AMIDEAST will conduct sessions that guide participants through a self-assessment process to identify skills, strengths, interests and personality traits; develop career goals and explore specific alternatives that match those goals. A key resource for this component of the program will be the “Career Essentials” course that AMIDEAST can provide through its partnership with Cisco Entrepreneur Institute. The course is a comprehensive, step-by-step guide for workforce preparation and includes sessions on career planning, getting a job, working life, and entrepreneurship
