Youth Exchange and Study Program (YES) - Oman

The Lebanese organization Iqra’ used a TAG grant to teach children about honesty and accountability in government.

AMIDEAST is pleased to announce it has started recruiting for the Youth Exchange and Study (YES) Scholarship Program for the 2010–2011 academic year.

The Youth Exchange and Study (YES) Program is a one-year scholarship program funded by the U.S. Government that enables secondary school students from the Middle East to study and live in the United States.

As a YES student, you will have the opportunity to:

  • Live with an American family
  • Study at a U.S. high school
  • Participate in a youth leadership training program
  • Experience U.S. culture and society first-hand
  • Improve your English
  • Make new friends
  • Help Americans learn about the Sultanate of Oman!

Applicants to the YES program must meet the following criteria:

  • Have a record of high academic achievement
  • Demonstrate flexibility and commitment to promoting cross-cultural understanding
  • Be at least 15 years old by August 1, 2010, and no older than 17 by August 1, 2010,
  • Entering grade 10 in Fall 2010
  • Achieve a score of 50 on the SLEP (Secondary Level English Proficiency) test by April 1, 2010 (exam to be administered by AMIDEAST)
  • Not be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident, and not have been born in the United States

Scholarship applicants are evaluated on the basis of language skills, their applications and supporting documents, an interview with a review panel, and the diversity they bring to the program.

YES scholarships cover all major expenses, including airfare, health insurance, spending money, and educational supplies. American host families provide a room and meals at no cost to the student. AMIDEAST helps to administer the YES program as part of a consortium that is funded by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau for Educational and Cultural Affairs and that is headed by AYUSA International (www.ayusa.org)and also includes American Councils (http://www.americancouncils.org/), ASSE International (www.asse.com), iEARN (www.iearn.org), CIEE (www.ciee.org), Pacific Intercultural Exchange (www.pieusa.org), and CCI ( www.cci-exchange.com).
