Precollege education in Kuwait lasts twelve years. Public schools offer three different programs: a regular academic curriculum, a religious curriculum that emphasizes Islamic studies, and a vocational curriculum that trains skilled labor as craftsmen. All Kuwaiti children are required to attend school through grade eight; those in the academic and religious tracks can continue on for four years of high school, and most do. Kindergarten is available, but it’s optional.

Kuwaiti high school graduates can continue their studies at several technical colleges, and at Kuwait University. Kuwait University offers bachelor’s degrees in many fields, and some master’s degrees as well. English is the language of instruction in all master’s degree programs. Students who want to pursue Ph.D.s often apply to universities abroad, including in the United States. In 1999, there were 3,013 Kuwait students enrolled in U.S. colleges and universities.  Most of them (2,235) were pursuing their bachelor's degree.
