Egypt
AMIDEAST/Egypt is a leading
provider of educational services in Egypt. Through its centers
in Cairo and Alexandria, it provides educational advising,
testing services, and training opportunities to thousands
of Egyptian students and professionals every year. In addition,
our offices in Egypt administer major scholarship programs
for the most outstanding students in Egypt, including the
Ford Foundation International Fellowships Program and the
Onsi Sawiris Scholarship Program, funded by Orascom Construction
Industries on behalf of the Sawiris Foundation for Social
Development. Last year, AMIDEAST/Egypt recorded more than
100,000 visits and processed over 46,000 registrations for
standardized tests needed for admission to U.S. institutions
of higher learning and for assessment of English language
proficiency.
In recent years, AMIDEAST has focused on workforce development
by expanding training opportunities for Egyptian students
and professionals. It trains mid-level professionals in
essential business communications skills, technology use,
and performance-based management practices. Working together
with local and international institutions and program sponsors,
it has helped thousands of recent college graduates acquire
vital job skills and helped expand and improve English language
training at the secondary and university levels.
In addition, in cooperation with the Egyptian government,
AMIDEAST participates in institutional development initiatives
such as the USAID-funded Administration of Justice Support
Project, which works with the Ministry of Justice to develop
training programs and introduce measures leading to reductions
in case delay and dispensation in the civil and commercial
courts.
AMIDEAST/Egypt is AMIDEASTs largest field operation. In
2006, it also became the organizations first field office
to celebrate its 50th anniversary. Established in August
1956 in Cairo, it has kept its doors in Egypt open continuously,
providing needed services and an ongoing channel for people-to-people
communication even during periods of tension in official
U.S.-Egyptian relations. It proudly celebrated its golden
anniversary in December 2006 with a gala dinner and a symposium
on Egyptian Education and Training for the Global Economy.
AMIDEAST is pleased to have contributed to Egyptian society
and to better understanding between Egyptians and Americans
through its long-term involvement in educational exchange,
training, and workforce development in Egypt.
