General EL Classes at AMIDEAST Alexandria
AMIDEAST Alexandria uses the New Interchange and Passages

Instructional methods in our classrooms provide students
with authentic communication opportunities. Students are
taught how to use English in a variety of situations related
to work, leisure, social life, and school. The underlying
philosophy is that students, if exposed to authentic situations
in a communicative environment, will be able to communicate
effectively in the second language. Through various activities,
opportunities are provided to build on students' own knowledge
of the language and personalize input.
In each course at AMIDEAST Alexandria, we work on improving
competency in the four skill areas: listening, speaking,
reading, and writing as well as improving pronunciation
and building vocabulary. The primary goal of our courses
is to teach communicative competencethe ability to
communicate in English according to the situation, purpose,
and roles of the participants. The language used in New
Interchange texts is American English; however, courses
at AMIDEAST Alexandria reflect the fact that English is
the major language of international communication and is
not limited to any one country, region or culture.
