MSN seeks to encourage and strengthen partnerships between schools and their communities that lead to an improved learning environment and school climate. This includes providing pupils with greater access to extracurricular programming and encouraging schools and parents to assume greater responsibility for planning and organizing such events. The aim is to promote a holistic approach to school improvement that includes all relevant stakeholders.
The 2009–2010 academic calendar of the Youth Enrichment Program (YEP) provides a range of interactive learning experiences in a competitive and collaborative environment, as well as creatively engaging students from multiple schools. The calendar includes the following:
Summer Camps – Discovery Days are summer camps organized in collaboration with Al Muntada Young Scientists Club which combine learning in science, math, and English. The two-week camps are structured to encourage active learning, critical thinking, discussion, and experimentation.
Science Field Trips – Al Quds University’s Science Discovery Center (SDC) offers interactive exhibits that foster curiosity and enthusiasm among students in science, math, and technology. As many as 12,000 students will take field trips to the museums.
Student Debate Forum – In partnership with the Open Society Institute and the International Debate Education Association, all MSN partner schools will have the opportunity to establish student debate clubs and participate in district and national debate tournaments.
School Performances – The Palestinian adaptation of Sesame Street, Shara’a Simsim, will reach as many as 12,000 children with themed performances targeting grades 1–3.
Interactive Project Teams – In partnership with First Lego League (FLL), schools will have the opportunity to create project teams that engage in a hands-on, interactive robotics program and a research presentation with a sports-like atmosphere.
Cultural Site Trips – MSN will arrange for schools to send students to historical sites in Palestine, as well as visit area vocational training schools.
School Workshops and Activity Support – MSN will sponsor art education workshops for students and teachers, as well as facilitate the creation of new school clubs, parent-teacher associations, and supplement classroom libraries.
