1. What is the U.S.-Egypt Higher Education Initiative?

 

The U.S.-Egypt Higher Education Initiative is an investment in Egypt’s future that provides educational opportunities for high-achieving Egyptians to acquire skills that will better meet the needs of the 21st century economy. The Initiative encourages partnerships between Egyptian and American universities for knowledge transfer, research, and joint degree programs that reflect the needs of the modern economy in critical disciplines such as agribusiness, engineering, and entrepreneurship. It provides scholarships for talented young Egyptians- women and men from underserved communities in rural and urban areas- to Egyptians and American universities in fields that will help them reach their aspirations and contribute to Egypt’s economic prosperity.

 

2. What is the Public University Scholarships?

 

The Public University Scholarships is one of the U.S.-Egypt Higher Education Initiative components. The program awards scholarships to more than 100 Thanaweyya Amma graduates each year for three years (high school graduates in 2015, 2016, and 2017) to study in the excellence sections in one of the top public universities in Egypt: Cairo, Ain Shams, Alexandria, Mansoura and Assuit. The program recipients will also receive additional beneficial trainings and participate in other activities throughout the years of their study.

 

3. How will this help the future of Egypt?

 

The specializations included in the scholarship program were carefully selected as priority areas needed for the development of the Egyptian economy. Your growth as a leader and with strong technical and personal skills will enable you to contribute to the growth of your future field of employment.

 

4. What are the excellence sections?

 

The excellence sections are fee-based sections at Egyptian public universities in which the language of instruction is English. The program is collaborating with excellence programs in five universities—Cairo, Mansoura, Alexandria, Assiut and Ain Shams Universities.

 

5. What are the fields of study?

 

Faculties of Engineering, Education, Information Technology, Science, Agriculture, Law, Commerce, Nursing, Mass Communication, and Economics.

 

6. Is faculty of commerce available for both science and arts department graduates?

 

Faculty of commerce has limited scholarship seats available, and priority for these seats will go to arts graduates. However, math and science thanaweyya amma graduates who show a strong desire to study commerce, if there are available seats, will also be able to join the faculty of commerce.

 

7. Is faculty of education available for both science and arts department?

 

Faculty of education is available only for students of science department (science and math)

 

8. Are there certain fields that might increase my chance of getting the scholarship?

 

All applicants must meet certain basic scholarship requirements. However, selecting agriculture as your first choice field of study will give you priority over other applicants during selection. This will make you more likely to be selected for the scholarship. Keep in mind that if you do select agriculture, as your first choice, you WILL NOT be allowed to change your field of study later during the scholarship.  Agriculture was selected as a priority field due to its importance in Egypt for economic growth.

 

9. Who can apply?

 

Egyptian Thanweyya Amma graduates achievers in their first two years of high schools (expecting to graduate with an 85% minimum score on the Thanaweyya Amma), actively engaged in their communities, demonstrating capacity for growth should apply. There are scholarships dedicated to special needs students.

 

10. What is the number of scholarships?

 

Over 100 awards each year for three years of recruitment (2015, 2016, 2017 Thanaweyya Amma graduates).

 

11. What does the program cover?

 

  • Tuition fees and ongoing academic support
  • Housing and Meals for on-campus students
  • Intensive English course and study skills program
  • Leadership, character building, and business development training
  • Mentoring and networking activities
  • Internship and summer training in the field of study
  • Summer community development project
  • Semester or summer abroad for selected students
  • Job search and placement support after graduation

 

12. How do I submit my application?

 

You can apply using the online application, which requires you to provide information about your studies, background, personal information and preferred fields of study. Applications will be accepted beginning in February 2016. 

 

13. I will not graduate this year – can I still apply?

 

We are currently selecting only students who are or will be 2015/2016 Thanaweyya Amma graduates. We encourage you to apply for the next call of applications for 2016/2017 school years.

 

14. Is there a specific template for a reference letter?

 

The reference letter should be addressed to the Local Scholarship Program from your Thanaweyya Amma teacher. A template can be downloaded from the application.

 

15. How do the scholarship recipients get selected?

 

Applications are reviewed and evaluated based on set criteria.  Shortlisted applicants are called in for a first interview at central locations throughout Egypt.  The final selection of recipients will be assessed during a 2-day assessment camp in Cairo.  The camp (including transportation to and from) will be fully paid for those semi-finalists who are invited.

Final selection will be based on your complete application package, including Thanaweyya Amma score, interviews and assessment camp.

 

16. When should I expect to hear back?

 

The initially selected applicants will be notified for an interview by SMS by mid-July. The 2-day camp attendees will be notified of their status by early August, 2016.  Communication will be primarily through SMS to the number listed in your online application, so please check messages frequently.

 

17. What will determine which university I go to?

 

The university will be based on the field of study you indicate in your application and the fields you are eligible for according to your Thanaweyya Amma score.  Your university placement will be determined by AMIDEAST.

 

18.  How many fields of study do I get to choose?

 

You can select three fields of study in your application.

 

19. Will all students get a chance to study abroad?

 

Only the top 65% of scholarship students will study abroad in the United States.

 

20. If I receive the scholarship, will you also cover my transportation to university if I live in a remote city?

 

Yes, the scholarship will cover the transportation between home and university once per year.

 

21. If I need to live at the university because it is far from my home, will you cover the cost of the university dormitory?

 

Yes, the scholarship covers the cost of accommodation and meals in university hostels for students who are unable to live near campus with family members.

 

22. When are the finalists announced?

 

The finalists will be announced by mid-August in time for the orientation and intensive English program, which will begin mid -August (exact date TBD).

 

23. How will I know if I am a finalist?

 

You will be contacted by SMS and/orphone calls if you are selected or not.

 

24. How many days and how much time am I expected to dedicate to the training programs?

 

The enhancement, leadership, community work and other activities are intensive and will take up most of your summer and midyear holidays for at least the first two years.

The program students are expected to participate in all program activities.

 

25. What certificate/degree will I obtain when I finish this program?

 

You will obtain your bachelor's degree in your field of study from the public university you attended. You will also receive a certificate for the enhancement program you attended (including the English course, the leadership training etc.).  You may also receive certificates or letters from the companies you interned with and the NGO where you completed your project. For those studying abroad in the U.S., you will get a transcript of your studies at the university.

 

26. Will the program certificate be accepted by employers in Egypt and abroad?

 

Your degree will be accepted as any other Egyptian university degree.  The program will prepare you through training, summer internships, and linkages with businesses to acquire required skills for employment.

 

27. I do not have a computer, but I have access to the internet from my phone. Can I use that to apply?

 

Yes, you can.  You can also use the computers at the listed NGOs throughout Egypt to apply and receive guidance on how to complete the application.

 

28. Are mobile phone photos accepted instead of scanning?

 

Yes, but you must make sure that they are clear and can be easily read.

 

29. What happens if I am not successful after my first year in university? Will there be a penalty? What will I lose?

 

The program provides a great deal of coaching, mentoring and advising opportunities. Students are expected to be committed and to work hard, and will be supported through this.  We do not expect students to drop out. Students who need to drop out for circumstances beyond their control will be dealt with on a case by case basis. It is anticipated that these students would transfer to the appropriate faculty in a regular program. All extra training and benefits would be lost.

 

30. After completing the application, does this mean I don’t need to apply to General Tansik process?

 

No, the process of the scholarship is separate from the universities’ general selection process through the Tansik. After applying to the program, it is your responsibility to apply to unviersity through the general governmental Tansik process.

 

31. What documents do I need for the application process?

 

Before starting your application, you need to make sure that you have the following documents ready to attach:

  • Recommendation Letter
  • Certificates of 1st and 2nd secondary school years
  • Student record issued from school student affairs in case of warnings or suspension.
  • Brief of extra-curricular activities
  • National ID
  • Parents' financial statement (Bank statement – Electricity bill)
  • Parental consent letter 

Note that incomplete applications will not be taken into consideration, so kindly make sure you complete your application before submitting.

 

32. What is the criteria that is used for screening applicants?

 

This scholarship intends to benefit students from families with limited income. Selection criteria also take into consideration academic performance, engagement in community activities, content of the application and performance during interviews. All applicants are assessed using the same set of criteria to insure a fair and transparent process.
