A training program funded by the Secretary’s Office of Global Women’s Issues of the United States Department of State

The Secretary’s Office of Global Women’s Issues of the U.S. Department of State is accepting nominations for qualified Iraqi women leaders in legal and civil society professions for a training program designed to expand opportunities for women in Iraqi society. The two-week program will be conducted in the U.S. in English, with simultaneous interpretation into Arabic.

Target Audience

This program is designed to support Iraqi women working in law or in the civil society sector in addressing issues related to gender-based violence.

Program Objectives

The purpose of this program is:

  • To create an opportunity for Iraqi professionals in law and civil society to form lasting networks that will support their efforts after the completion of the program,
  • To build coalitions and relationships between program participants and the U.S. counterparts with whom they will interact, that will serve them in the future,
  • To provide practical skills that program participants can employ in their work after the completion of the program.

Program Content

  • Interaction with U.S. local, state, and federal judicial models addressing gender-based violence,
  • Demonstrations of models of community-based programs in the Washington, D.C. area that aim to protect victims of gender-based violence,
  • Exposure to U.S. public campaigns that call awareness to problems of gender-based violence,
  • Briefings with U.S. professionals in this field to discuss approaches and share experiences,
  • Introduction to relevant professional societies and organizations in this field and their resources.

Program Participation Requirements

To be considered for this program, interested parties must meet the following criteria:

  • Female
  • A citizen of Iraq, currently living in Iraq
  • Can commit to being in the U.S. for duration of program
  • Currently employed as a lawyer, judge, legal prosecutor, or NGO worker with a focus on:
    • protection of women against gender-based violence, or
    • public awareness on addressing gender-based violence and prevention, or
    • rehabilitation of victims of gender-based violence.
