Model Schools Network (MSN) Program

Program Summary
Launched in fall 2007, the Model Schools Network (MSN) Program is a USAID-funded initiative aims to improve basic education in Palestine over a five-year period. MSN will introduce a student-centered, contemporary approach to teaching and learning at 20 private schools in the West Bank. Organized into a “network,” these “model schools” will in turn serve as the foundation for replicating lessons learned and best practices at other Palestinian schools during and beyond MSN’s lifespan.

During the MSN project’s four years, more than 9,500 children and 160 teachers and principals will benefit directly as pilot reforms are introduced at the model schools. AMIDEAST will partner with three local Palestinian organizations—Birzeit University, Al Quds University, and Al Muntada: The Young Scientists’ Club to implement the project.

Main Goals

  • Promote better teaching practices in Palestinian schools, grades K-9

  • Improve professional development of teachers and administrators

  • Enhance English, math, and science curricula

  • Encourage professional networking among teachers and other school staff

  • Foster “communities of learning” that best support children’s learning outcomes by establishing linkages between schools and their communities

Highlights

  • In 2009, MSN began the process of establishing Professional Certificate Programs for teachers of the subjects targeted by this program—Math, English, and Science—as well as those who teach an integrated curriculum at grades 1-3, along with Principals/Directors. Modeled after AMIDEAST’s Professional Certificate in English Teaching (PCET), they are designed to improve teaching methods in these subject areas.

  • In 2008, MSN finalized the selection of pilot schools; completed student, teacher, and facilities needs assessments; launched an ongoing school improvement planning process; and engaged the Ministry of Education and Higher Education with an eye toward replication of the pilot on a broader scale within the Palestinian public school system.
