Overview

AMIDEAST/Egypt seeks an EducationUSA Adviser, to be based in Cairo. The EducationUSA Adviser, reporting to the Senior Adviser in Cairo, represents U.S. higher education to Egyptians seeking to study at accredited undergraduate, graduate, professional or other institutions in the U.S.  The adviser offers public sessions on the admissions process, financial aid, intercultural issues, logistics and other topics as required and appropriate. The adviser also offers one-on-one advising sessions, oversees the Competitive College Club and some components of Opportunity Grants in Cairo (details provided below).

The primary role of the EducationUSA Adviser in Cairo is to promote higher education and study opportunities in the United States.  EducationUSA is a U.S. Department of State-supported network of hundreds of advising centers around the world. Each year, EducationUSA advisers provide millions of international students with accurate, comprehensive and current information about how to apply for admission to U.S. colleges and universities. EducationUSA staff also work with U.S. higher education professionals to promote international student recruitment. AMIDEAST implements the EducationUSA program in Egypt, with advisers based in Cairo and Alexandria.

AMIDEAST is a leading American non-profit organization engaged in international education, training and development activities in the Middle East and North Africa. AMIDEAST programs and services touch the lives of half a million individuals a year – improving educational opportunities and quality, strengthening local institutions, and developing language and professional skills critical for success in the global economy.

Tasks and Responsibilities

Advising Responsibilities:

  • Serve as a point of contact for Egyptians seeking guidance and information on studying in the U.S.
  • Manage monthly advising calendar and oversee social media presence
  • Conduct group orientation sessions for the public, as well as individual consultations
  • Work with the Senior Adviser and other appropriate staff to develop and implement annual advising and outreach plans, including developing and monitoring programs budgets.
  • Coordinate speakers, produce materials, update presentation information, and promote the annual pre-departure orientations that are held for students preparing to travel to the U.S.
  • Maintain the organization of the EducationUSA resource center with up-to-date materials, books, and promotional brochures as well as computer/internet access for students to do online research.
  • Plan and organize outreach visits to public and private high schools to promote U.S. higher education, Opportunity Grants and the Competitive College Club.
  • Work with the Regional Educational Advising Coordinator, and with Cultural Affairs and Consular Offices at the U.S. Embassy
  • Plan and coordinate events for the annual International Education Week
  • Coordinate with U.S. university representatives and local schools to help representatives recruit students from Egypt and assist them set-up appointments at local high schools.
  • Compile and submit reports and statistics to the Regional Educational Advising Coordinator (REAC)/U.S. Department of State and AMIDEAST headquarters on a monthly basis.
  • Represent the EducationUSA network when needed at various conferences and workshops.

Opportunity Grant Responsibilities:

Opportunity Grants (OG) are small grants to support talented students who may need financial assistance to take the next steps toward study in the United States at an accredited institution of higher learning. These grants are available to help cover the upfront costs of seeking higher education in the U.S. and are part of EducationUSA’s broad range of assistance to international students.

The adviser will:

  • Identify, select and recruit eligible students for Opportunity Grants.
  • Provide one-on-one support and advising for Opportunity Grant scholars applying to U.S. institutions.
  • Prepare and edit the monthly statistics, updates and narrative reports for the REAC and submit via the EducationUSA webpage.
  • Manage student’s academic progress and report to the REAC.
  • Maintain the confidentiality of student files for Opportunity scholars, including their various records and personal information.
  •  Manage and compile financial reports regarding all Opportunity expenses and  reporting to both the REAC and HQ.

EducationUSA Competitive College Club (CCC) Responsibilities:

The Competitive College Club (CCC) is an EducationUSA initiative that started in the Middle East and now has many locations around the world.  The CCC aims to assist students in developing key critical thinking skills, prepare for SAT and TOEFL, engage with the community, research university options, complete applications and apply for scholarships and other financial support.

In support of the CCC, the adviser will:

  • As part of the recruitment process, promote CCC to principals at local high schools, language schools, NGOs, AFS, and the U.S. Embassy.
  • Coordinate volunteers for the CCC in order to run various activities and to be guest speakers. These volunteers often include Gilman scholars, AMIDEAST Education Abroad students, U.S. Embassy staff, university representatives, NGO workers and community coordinators.
  • Interview, check grade reports, and review the applications of every CCC applicant in order to determine the competitiveness of each student to apply to top colleges and universities.
  • Assign an English literature book and run a book review each month in order to better prepare students for SAT and the U.S. college classroom style.
  • Run weekly and bi-weekly meetings with CCC members, and present in-depth advising on all admissions topics, including: personal statements, recommendation letters, choosing schools, applications orientation, financial aid and scholarships, etc. 
  • Provide free SAT and TOEFL preparation for CCC members, including tutoring sessions, online and print materials.
  • Report to the REAC about the progress of CCC members each month.
  • Maintain student files for each CCC student.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree (preferably from a U.S. university)
  • Experience in relevant field
  • Availability to travel domestically and internationally

Skills Required:

  • Native or near-native written and oral English skills, at least a working knowledge of Arabic preferred
  • Interpersonal and presentation skills
  • Computer literacy in MS Office
  • Experience in both Egyptian and U.S. education and exchange activities
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize responsibilities
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of a team
