GRE®: General/Subject Tests for Graduate Study

GRE®: General/Subject Tests for Graduate Study

The Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) are required for applicants to many graduate-level programs in the United States and for some international universities.

The GRE is made up of the General Test, composed of analytic writing, verbal reasoning, and quantitative reasoning sections. GRE Subject Tests are also offered, testing knowledge in specific academic fields.

The GRE General Test is most commonly provided in a computer-based format. A paper-based GRE General Test is administered on limited dates in locations where computer testing is not dependable. GRE Subject Tests are administered in a paper-based format on limited dates.
