TOEIC Tests and Your Résumé

A few months back I was talking to a representative of the credential evaluation service World Education Services (WES). He told me that WES advises their clients to put a very short, WES-generated description of their degrees on their résumé, showing potential employers how each degree compares to a U.S. degree. He suggested that we should help people do the same thing with their TOEIC test scores.

As with credential evaluation of a degree, TOEIC test scores provide objective, external proof of what a person says on their résumé, in this case regarding their English language skills.

TOEIC® Success Story: University of Toronto

I found the following story from the ETS "Success Stories" files about the TOEIC® Listening & Reading test particularly interesting for two reasons. First of all, it describes problems with in-house placement tests similar to those we frequently hear about from our clients. Second, it discusses an advantage that I don't think people always think about in relation to TOEIC tests the speed with which our university and other institutional clients can get information back on the English language skills of their students or employees.

The Challenge: Placing incoming students quickly and accurately.

English Language Teaching Sites Recommended by Propell Participants

It’s amazing how many free, useful sites there are for teachers and learners of English. Or maybe not—successful teachers by nature love both to learn and to share their knowledge.

BESIG Monthly Webinars

If you haven’t heard of BESIG (and I hadn’t until a few months back when I started following their Twitter posts) they are the business English special interest group of the International Association of Teachers of English as a Foreign Language (IATEFL). IATEFL is based in the U.K. and draws the bulk of their membership from outside the U.S. but, like TESOL in the U.S., they are a global organization useful for English teachers worldwide. And, in my opinion, BESIG stands out in the variety and depth of its resources for teachers of business English.

A new activity for them is a series of  professional development workshops that are given online.

Propell Teacher Workshops for TOEIC® Tests: The Experience

Seventeen English teachers and trainers arrived at the TOEIC® Propell workshops last month with little idea what to expect. It was the first time either they or we at AMIDEAST’s English4Success Division had experienced Propell and in fact the first time ETS had ever offered Propell for TOEIC in the United States.

The workshops proved a very interactive experience that got rave reviews. The two days, one focused on TOEIC Listening & Reading and the other TOEIC Speaking & Writing, were quite different from each other, but both provided participants who in many cases were familiar only with academic English tests such as TOEFL the opportunity to come together to share best practices for teaching English, and specifically the types of English needed for on-the-job communication and TOEIC test preparation.
