STRIKING In this beautiful country located on the Arabian Pennisuila, AMIDEAST students are exposed to a way of life unfamiliar to most Americans. With Oman’s borders and capital city once extending to Zanzibar, the Omani language and self-identification is unique s in the Arab world. Oman’s environment is hot and dry throughout most of the year, and is characterized by extraordinary natural formations and forts, towers, and ancient city walls dotting the landscape. Through both learning and service components, AMIDEAST students navigate this distinctive Omani environment on a daily basis.

DYNAMIC Oman is a unique historical case for both the larger Arab world and the Arabian peninsula. Thoughout much of Oman's history, the country has avoided direct European control and as a result Omanis have charted their own trade routes, built connections in East Africa, and invested in Islamic Scholarship.

Virtually isolated from the West before 1970, Oman is now faced with the dichotomy of rapid development and preservation of traditional culture. Since he took power from his father in 1970, Sultan Qaboos bin said al Said has invested heavily in Oman’s infrastructure and education system while working to build mutual understanding and peaceful communication between the West and the Middle East. Through regular interaction with local Omani university students, AMIDEAST participants gain an insiders’ perspective into this globally-significant region.

REWARDING Service learning defines the AMIDEAST Oman experience. Participants have the opportunity not only to learn colloquial Omani Arabic and culture, but also to serve the Omani community. Service activities are organized by AMIDEAST participants under the supervision of Omani university personnel. AMIDEAST students have the unique opportunity to live alongside Omani students and directly contribute to the advancement of the Omanis' English language abilities. Whether assisting with English lessons for Omani youth or savoring the local cuisine with Omani friends, AMIDEAST students proudly promote cross-cultural connections and build lasting friendships.
