Throughout the program, students will take this introductory course on the study and composition of traditional Islamic art. Classes will be held at the Institute’s facilities in Amman, with some workshops also located in the nearby city of Salt (transportation will be provided if/when necessary). Students will focus on the production of traditional Islamic art forms in calligraphy, illumination, Persian miniature painting, gypsum plaster carving, zillij tile mosaics and wood working. Each student must choose one of these media and then develop a personal project with the assistance of a tutor from the Institute. In carrying out their projects each student will produce visual portfolio sheets reflecting upon the both visual and textual research of source materials, color work, geometric analysis. Documentation of all work and the methodology utilized is expected and necessary for evaluation.
