Partner Institution: Cairo University Faculty of Engineering

Cairo University is Egypt’s largest and most prestigious public university. Founded in 1908, it has a total enrollment of more than 280,000 students of whom 180,000 are full-time. Of these students, about 4,700 are international students – 3,200 undergraduates and 1,500 graduates. There are a very small number of students from the U.S. and Western Europe, with an average of around 50-100 per year, almost all of them non-degree seeking European students auditing classes.

Cairo University’s Faculty of Engineering traces its roots back to Egypt’s first engineering school, which was established in 1816 by Egypt’s great leader Muhammad Ali Pasha. The Faculty of Engineering is directly descended from separate schools of irrigation and architecture established in 1866 by Muhammad Ali’s son Khedive Ismail. Today it is Egypt’s most celebrated engineering school, with most of its faculty members holding doctoral degrees from institutions in the U.S., UK, Canada, Germany, and other European countries.  To learn more about the Faculty of Engineering, visit their website here.

In 2007, Cairo University established the first full-time international office at an Egyptian public university. Today the International Students Bureau – ISB office includes four full-time and two part-time staff members. To learn more about ISB you can visit their website by clicking here.
