Partner Institution—Cairo University, Faculty of Engineering

Cairo University is Egypt’s largest and most prestigious public university. Founded in 1908, it has a total enrollment of more than 280,000 students of whom 180,000 are full-time. Of these students, about 4,700 are international students – 3,200 undergraduates and 1,500 graduates. There are a very small number of students from the U.S. and Western Europe, with an average of around 50-100 per year, almost all of them non-degree seeking European students auditing classes.

Cairo University’s Faculty of Engineering traces its roots back to Egypt’s first engineering school, which was established in 1816 by Egypt’s great leader Muhammad Ali Pasha. The Faculty of Engineering is directly descended from separate schools of irrigation and architecture established in 1866 by Muhammad Ali’s son Khedive Ismail. Today it is Egypt’s most celebrated engineering school, with most of its faculty members holding doctoral degrees from institutions in the U.S., UK, Canada, Germany, and other European countries.  To learn more about the Faculty of Engineering, visit their website here.

In 2007, the Faculty introduced its Credit Hour Programs which is modeled after the curriculum at U.S. and European engineering schools. The Credit Hour Programs has a separate admissions process, significantly higher tuition than the regular program within the Faculty of Engineering, and it is taught entirely in English. The program has much smaller classes than the traditional semester engineering programs in the Faculty as well.

The Credit Hour Program currently has 1,400 enrolled students studying in 7 engineering programs. The Program graduated its first class in 2009 in the Construction Engineering & Management (CEM) and Communications & Computer Engineering (CCE) programs You can learn more about the Credit Hour Program by visiting the Cairo University website.

You can also learn more about the programs from the Credit Hour Program's most recent flyer.

In 2007, Cairo University established the first full-time international office at an Egyptian public university. Today the International Students Bureau – ISB office includes four full-time and two part-time staff members. To learn more about ISB you can visit their website by clicking here.
