In 2006,
American, Egyptian, and Iraqi high school students
helped each other break down stereotypes and
other barriers to mutual understanding during
a unique three-way summer exchange program.
A Moroccan Ph.D. candidate in genetics returned
to his country to research possible links between
lifestyle changes and disease. Meanwhile, in
Egypt, aeronautical engineers received specialized
training that will enable them to meet that

while in Lebanon, small grants helped civil

AMIDEAST played an instrumental role in making
all of these opportunities possible.
For over half a century, AMIDEAST has been
dedicated to strengthening mutual understanding
between Americans and the peoples of the Middle
East and North Africa. In 2006, it had occasion
to celebrate this longstanding commitment to
mission as its field office in Egypt completed
fifty years of continuous operation, becoming
the first of AMIDEAST’s many regional offices
to mark its golden anniversary.
The following pages record AMIDEAST’s many
activities and accomplishments in 2006 in pursuit
of its mission.
